Hefezopf - Braided Sweet Bread

Big Daddy loves this sweet, braided bread. I'm sure you will love it as well.

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk until it is about 105° F. In the bowl of the mixer, Add the milk and the yeast and allow to rest for 10 minutes. You should see some bubbles forming on the surface.
  2. Add 1 egg and whisk. Add the flour, butter (in small pieces), sugar and salt.
  3. Knead for 7-10 minutes until a soft, elastic dough is formed.
  4. Place in an oiled bowl and allow to rise until double in bulk, about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down dough, and turn out onto a board. Divide into three equal size pieces. Roll each piece into a long roll. Pinch the 3 together and braid. Pinch ends together and place braid into a baking tray.
  6. Allow to rise for another 45 minutes. During the last few minutes, preheat the oven to 350° F.
  7. Beat the remaining egg. Using a pastry brush, apply the egg to the bread. Sprinkle with the almonds.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool before slicing.
